Oh, tell me what a poem does
Does it hide and await to be found?
A lyrical story behind an invisible veil
Yet right there at the tip of your pencil?
Or does it seek attention
Like a child in a highchair
Wailing, small hands outstretched
Begging to be written?
Is it powerful
Like the men of ancient Athens
Who stormed kingdoms renowned
Their names carved into history?
Can it, too, be soft
Like the pads of a kitten’s paw
Silent as a ghost against the ground?
Does it grab you by surprise
Like a hug from behind
Of a friend you’ve forgotten?
Does it leave lasting impressions
Impressions imprinted onto your mind and soul
Calling you back to read it once more?
Oh, please tell me what a poem does
